Dusty’s Big Dog Challenge Online Days of Giving

Monday, March 23 - Tuesday, March 24, 2026

The Ottumwa Community School District is inviting students, families, and community members to participate in Dusty’s Big Dog Challenge Online Days of Giving on Monday, March 23, through Tuesday, March 24, 2026, a special 48-hour effort to support the animals at Heartland Humane Society.

Community members who wish to support Heartland Humane Society with a monetary donation may do so online through the district. These contributions help provide food, adoption costs, medical care, and essential resources for animals in need throughout the year.

As part of Dusty’s Big Dog Challenge, schools, students, local businesses, and community members have been raising awareness and support for animals waiting for their forever homes. The Online Day of Giving encourages the community to come together through donations that directly benefit the shelter and the pets in its care.

Throughout the challenge, we have shared adoption stories, hosted visits from adoptable pets, organized creative fundraisers, and partnered with local businesses to support the cause. Thanks to these efforts, more than 60 pets have already found their forever homes this month.

“Dusty’s Big Dog Challenge has shown just how powerful our community can be when we come together for a great cause,” said Superintendent Mike McGrory. “Our students, staff, families, and local partners have embraced this effort in incredible ways, and the result is real impact for animals at Heartland Humane Society. The Day of Giving is another opportunity for our community to step forward, show compassion, and help more pets find the loving homes they deserve.”

Dusty's Story

This is Dusty.

Dusty was more than Mr. McGrory’s dog; he was a reminder of the power of second chances. Found as a puppy in Ottumwa, Dusty came into the McGrory family as a rescue and, with patience and love, became a beloved family favorite (and a legendary sandwich thief). Dusty lived 17 wonderful years showing what happens when a community chooses compassion.

In Dusty’s honor, and as part of the challenge, Superintendent McGrory, Dusty Ware with Warehouse BBQ and Floor to Ceiling, Anthony Christner with Christner Contracting, Jered Pierce with Pierce Fencing, and the Ottumwa Legacy Foundation will cover adoption fees through Heartland Humane Society, helping more dogs find their forever homes and giving more “Dusty stories” a chance to begin. We encourage you to thank the many contributors and partners who have helped make this effort possible. Thank you for your donation, big or small—your support truly makes a difference.
