James Elementary School is turning 50, and the Ottumwa Community School District invites the community to help celebrate this special milestone.
James Elementary officially opened its doors in the fall of 1974, welcoming students from the west end of Ottumwa who had previously attended Douglas and Fairview Elementary Schools. The original open house and celebration of this new building took place on April 27, 1975. Now, fifty years later, the school is marking the occasion by revisiting that memorable event.
Glen James (1908–1981) served as principal at multiple schools, including Fairview, Douglas, and Hedrick schools. His contributions helped shape the educational experiences of countless students during his tenure. His legacy continues through the generations of students who have passed through the halls of James Elementary.
A 50th Anniversary Open House will be held at James Elementary, 1001 N Benton St, Ottumwa, on Sunday, April 27, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Guests are invited to tour the building, view upcoming renovation updates, enjoy cake and punch, and explore a collection of class photos and scrapbooks from throughout the decades.
Former students, staff members, families, and community supporters are invited to attend, reconnect, and reflect on the proud history and continued impact of James Elementary in the Ottumwa community.
