Ottumwa Community School District
Ottumwa Community School Community & Families,

The Iowa Department of Education released information this week about our school's Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) designations.

Below are key points in understanding what the ESSA designations mean for our schools:
  • ESSA maintains a focus on school accountability and equity for all students.
  • Iowa’s school accountability and support system focuses attention and resources on schools that need it the most.
  • Iowa’s system is designed to support schools, not punish them.
Accountability Determinations/School Identification
  • Each school receives an overall score based on performance on specific, federally required measures. Schools also receive a score for each subgroup of students.
  • Iowa’s accountability system places the greatest emphasis on academic proficiency and growth.
  • Schools that are identified as needing support will receive additional support from the state, are eligible for additional federal funds to help them improve, and will develop clear school improvement plans.
  • Parents and community members of schools that are identified for support and improvement will have the opportunity to participate in the development of school improvement plans.
Iowa School Performance Profiles
  • ESSA requires all states to publish report cards reflecting the performance of the state, schools, and school districts. Iowa’s report card is called the Iowa School Performance Profile.
  • Report cards provide an overall view of school performance as well as more detailed information, making it easier for stakeholders to understand how each school is serving its students.
  • Access to clear, detailed, and transparent information enables parents/guardians and other stakeholders to ask questions and better contribute to local conversations about school improvement.
  • Educators, parents, and other stakeholders can use information in the Iowa School Performance Profiles to celebrate achievements, pinpoint areas for improvement, and ask questions for transparency.
  • The Iowa School Performance Profiles are published here - https://www.iaschoolperformance.gov/
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s school for more information or questions.

Sincerely,
Mike McGrory
Superintendent
